Puerto de Santa María (Santa Maria Port) is situated on the Cadiz coast in the interior of the Bay of Cadiz, on the banks of the mouth of the River Guadalete.

According to legend the city was founded by Menesteo, the Athenian King who took part in the Trojan War.

In the architecture of Puerto de Santa María the previous civilizations that inhabited the city have left their mark, with very attractive historical monuments with Roman and Arab influences, as much in religious buildings as in civil buildings.  Years ago it was known as the City of a Hundred Palaces due to the number of buildings of this type within its city limits.  The Victoria Monastery is perhaps the most notable monument in the town.

It was in 1260 when Alfonso X re-conquered the city from the Muslims and named it Santa María del Puerto, and it was here where the caravel Santa Maria equipped itself with supplies before its voyage to America. In 1500 the first World map which included the recently discovered America was created in this town.

The climate of the city is characterized by being essentially Mediterranean, with quite mild winters and summers not unbearably hot due to the ocean breezes.  With an average annual temperature of 18 °C, and over 3000 hours of sunshine a year, it has earned the name Costa de la Luz.

Its principal economic activity has traditionally been fishing, but now both international and national tourism have become the main source of income for the town.

Puerto de Santa María is one of the three towns on the Sherry Triangle, an area known for the production of its excellent wine: El Puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Jerez de la Frontera.

Among its festivals are Carnival, Semana Santa, and the Fair (the “Feria”) – the latter being one of the most important of the Province – and the celebrations in the emblematic Plaza de Toros (Bull Ring) which the town hosts in the summer months (July and August), with a series of bull-fights in which the most talented matadors of the moment take centre stage.
