According to archaeological testaments, Córdoba reached a population of one million inhabitants in the 10th Century, being the largest, most civilized and wealthy city in the entire world. In the Middle Ages in Europe it became a temple for the Arts and Sciences. The city boasted a multitude of fountains, public street lighting and drains.

Situated on the shores of the River Guadalquivir and at the foot of the Morena mountain range, its history spans thousands of years and its architecture reminds us of when it was capital of “Hispania Ulterior” during the Roman Republic, and of the Province of Betica under the Roman Empire, and of the Caliphate of Cordoba during the Moorish Reign, when Cordoba achieved its maximum glory and splendour.

It has the second-largest historical Old City in Europe, as well as the largest urban area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in which the Mosque of Cordoba, symbol of the city and present day cathedral, obviously stands out, along with the magnificent Roman Bridge as the most well-known monuments of the city.

Other monuments which can be enjoyed in Cordoba are the Palace of the Christian Kings (Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos); the Tower of Calahorra; the remains of the Medina Azahara,  as well as various museums such as the Provincial Archaeological Museum; the Julio Romero de Torres Museum; and the Municipal Bull-fighting Museum among others.

The most important festivals are Las Cruces (the Crosses) in May, in which the locals take to the streets at night to celebrate a competition of crosses ornately decorated with flowers, followed by a competition of decorated courtyards, where we can marvel at the most beautiful courtyards of Cordoba, exultant with amazing flowers which delight visitors to the town.

The festivities of Easter (Semana Santa), which are slightly more solemn than in other Andalucian cities, are also one of Cordoba’s main festivals.
