La Coruña (officially A Coruña in Gallego) is the capital city of the Province of the same name.

In the last few years tourism has increased steadily in the city, receiving up to 62 cruise liners a year. One of the catalysts of this increase in tourism was the building of the promenade, which borders the whole peninsula of the city, measuring around 10km at the moment.

The most important monuments are: The Collegiate Church (Colegiata) of Santa María; the Romanic Church of Santiago (c.XII-XIII Century); the San Antón Castle; the “Galleries”, windowed balconies which are best represented by the houses in front of the Marina; the famous fish markets, a delight for all seafood lovers.

Among all these tourist sites, the most symbolic is the Tower of Hercules, situated between the Orzan Beach and the Gulf of Artabro, the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world, declared a World Heritage Site in 2009.  Coruña’s interactive museums are also quite remarkable, ideal for visiting with children: “La Casa del Hombre”, known as The Domus, “La Casa de las Ciencias”, where the Planetarium is also found, and “La Casa de los Peces”, or Finisterrae Aquarium.

A Coruña has more than 2km of city beaches, the main ones being Riazor Beach, Orzan Beach, and Matadero Beach in the city centre, Las Lapas Beach, at the foot of the Tower of Hercules, and San Amaro Beach, all Blue Flag certified, and finally Oza Beach at the mouth of the El Burgo Estuary.

August is the main month of city celebrations, but Carnival and the Night of San Juan (23rd June), probably the wildest night of the year when the city literally “burns”, are not to be missed.
