Fuengirola is situated on the central coast of the Province of Malaga, and is part of the Costa del Sol, being one of its most tourist enclaves.
Founded by the Phoenicians, but Romans, Byzantines, Visigoths and Arabs all passed through Fuengirola leaving their essence ingrained on the city: Sohail Castle, an Arab fort built on the site of a Roman fortress, Torreblanca Termas (baths), an archaeological site of Roman origin. After the Christian Re-conquest in 1487 the Spanish named the city after a fountain which sprung at the foot of the castle Font Jirola.
Known today as the White City (Villa Blanca), it is a city of tall buildings which contrast with the fishing neighbourhood of Santa Fe de los Boliches, with the typical low, white-washed houses. It has an exceptional 7km long promenade, with seven urban beaches all fit for bathing. In 2009 Fuengirola became the first municipality in Spain to have all its beaches awarded Blue Flag status. Its marina and golf courses complete its first-class tourist facilities.
The typical dishes of Fuengirola are noodles fish platter (fideos a banda), deep-fried battered fish, skewered sardines, Malaga salad, and Fuengirola cakes.
The Castle Festival in July is considered of National Tourist Interest.
