Matalascañas, officially the Department of Matalascañas and Caño Guerrero, is a coastal centre which pertains to the municipality of Almonte in the province of Huelva, and is completely surrounded by the Doñana National Nature Reserve.

It has the privilege of having the only access to the park through the Doñana Park Beaches, forty kilometres to enjoy the sea that bathes one of the most important nature reserves in Europe.

One of its principal landmarks and tourist attractions is the Tower of the Higuera, a 16th century stone tower commissioned by King Felipe II as a military defence post.  It no longer serves a military purpose, but along with the Iberian lynx it is the symbol of the city.  Other points of interest are the Marine World Museum, and the Dunes of Doñana Park.

Delicious local dishes include: fried fish, Serrano cured ham, gazpacho, salmorejo, flamenquínes, la pringá, bull’s tail, Jabugo cured ham, olives, la alboronía, wild mushrooms, la poleá, and Ojén anise.
