The history of Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia, dates to prehistoric times - the Castro culture – and encompasses the arrival of the Romans and then, significantly, its becoming the burial site of St James the Apostle.
From this moment in time the city established itself as the seat of power in the region, represented by the Archbishop of Santiago and the Cathedral.
The Santiago Way led to the growth of the city turning it into one of the most important destinations for Christian Pilgrims, together with Rome and Jerusalem.
The Old Town of Santiago, with its Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture, is one of the most beautiful city centres in the world, where its 500 year old university adds a pleasant student atmosphere to the city.
Santiago Cathedral is an architectural jewel and a spiritual reference point at the end of the Santiago Way and houses the famous Pórtico de la Gloria, considered the defining work of Romanesque architecture. In front of the cathedral we find the Plaza del Obradoiro which boasts the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, formerly a hospital for pilgrims and now a National Parador Hotel of the highest order.
The highlight of the local festivals is that of the Apostle, which takes place during the second fortnight of July. They combine a variety of events such as the Galician International Music Festival which complement the cultural activities throughout July.
